About our Foundation
Throughout the UK and Ireland each year thousands of children are born with disabilities that severely affect their mobility, causing very real limits on their quality of life. This can be dramatically improved by the use of a modern and sophisticated powered wheelchair, giving the freedom and mobility to gain a degree of independence.
In 1974 George Makey MBE contacted Peter to ask him to be part of a charity to raise funds for powered wheelchairs and become the face of the charity. Peter agreed. With the support of many of his celebrity friends and high profile professional golfers the charity Peter Alliss Masters got off to a flying start in 1988 and has gone from strength to strength.
Some may well recall it being known as ‘Golfers Anonymous’ but more so as ‘The Marley Wheelchair Classic’.
Lee Trevino and Fuzzy Zoeller were the first ‘high profile’ professional golfers to donate PWCs and set a precedent, following that Open Champions over the years have personally donated more than 30 powered wheelchairs to ‘the crusade’, Seve Ballesteros alone donated 17!
The cost of chairs can vary enormously with a price tag between £3,000 and £13,000. They are built to a design that meets the specific needs of each child. Everyone who raises sufficient funds to buy a chair in conjunction with The Peter Alliss Masters Tournament, will also experience the heart warming presentation of their chair to a child from their locality.
The charity’s aim is to raise monies and to encourage golf clubs, societies, businesses and individuals to get involved and provide funds for a chair in their name for a child near their local area Over the years the charity has provided well in excess of 1,000 chairs around the UK.
